OUR Story

It is the mission of THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE to providing quality training in multiple styles of traditional, acoustic music, enabling students to learn and love music as they develop their skills and repertoire. The Cat and The Fiddle strives to support not only students, but also teachers by creating a cooperative musical environment where they can thrive as they share their talents.

The Cat and The Fiddle was born from two people deciding to step away from the rush of city living and find a more simple way of life in rural West Virginia. At the end of 2016 Richard and Dakota Karper moved from Baltimore, MD to Hampshire County, WV where Dakota started teaching fiddle from their living room and various pop-up locations in the area. Quickly outgrowing these spaces, the time came to build a brick and mortar.

"As young entrepreneurs, we are excited to have our music school in Capon Bridge, WV - a place where dying buildings come to life and the traditions of the Appalachians thrive. During construction, we would stand in front of The Cat and The Fiddle, imagining the students coming and going from classes, jams sessions being held and the sound of music wafting out the doors and through the town. Those dream have now become something real and tangible. The Cat and The Fiddle has become a co-operative music environment where local musicians can come and share their talents and where students can come refine their skills or even learn to fall in love with music for the very first time."

Ground breaking for construction began in March of 2019 and The Cat and The Fiddle opened its doors in July of the same year.
